Becoming a Wigix Category Expert is a relatively straight forward process.  First, you must establish a Wigix account.  Then, from the Wigix.com homepage, click on the “Profit from your expertise” link, find a category not already taken, and then submit an application.

I found that it was help to follow-up with an email to username “Wigix Catalog” with some evidence of my expertise to hasten the approval process.  The benefit of being a Category Expert is that you receive 1% of any revenue generated in the category (advertising and transaction fees).  Once approved, you must create the category structure within 30 days and actively maintain it for a year.  You can become a Wigix category expert for up to three categories.  That is the easy part.

The challenge of being the expert is becoming familiar with the platform, and understanding its data input and catalog search conventions.  As the expert you have full control of the category; however, sometimes you’ll need to engage with the overall Wigix Catalog manager to lobby for changes and/or to get modification assistance not readily available through Category Expert Workbench provided.

Actively maintaining a Wigix category includes approving page submissions and ensuring the appropriate visibility of the category while ensuring that the category is not dormant for more than 29 days. Others can add pages to the catalog listing products within your category and it is the job of the expert to ensure the listing pages conform.  Along the way, you may find that you have to alter product attributes, search filters, and/or SKU naming defaults to further refine the catalog search experience.

There is one catch with being a Wigix Category Expert.  Annually you must be ”re-elected” the Category Expert and that could include actively campaigning for the position.  Your constituency is all Wigix members because all can vote.  It appears that most, if not all, of the current Category Experts are building the categries from scratch.  This will not be necessary down the road as Experts fall off or are voted out. As of the date of this blog, several category expert slots are still available, but vanishing steadily.
